After a defensive battle against the division rivals from Tirol, Munich wanted to support their strong defense with offensive points- mission succeeded. 38-16 is the final score in Unterhaching this Sunday, Berlin never came close after a strong start by Munich.
Berlin came to Munich with self- confidence after winning their home opener against Cologne 63 – 14. But Munich was focused from the first minute on. The opening script by Head coach Ellison worked out perfectly and led to early six points for the Ravens. Russell Tabor hyped up the crowd with 2 completions and his 56 yard run into the Thunder red zone. Ravens kicker Schweiger, after having a tough start in Week 1 (PAT: 0/1, FG: 0/1), converted the PAT to a seven point lead.
Strong defense forces Thunder offense off the field
And Munich didn`t give the Thunder a chance to get in the game. Etuale Lui made the interception to regain possesion for the offense around Tabor, who threw an 8- yard pass to Ahsan Moore on 3rd & 8. Moores first ELF Touchdown put Munich up 13 points and.
The Ravens defense kept Berlin off the board up until two and a half minutes before halftime, when Jakeb Sullivan found his most targeted Receiver Niklas Schumm in the endzone for 20 yards and six points. Berlins Quarterback Sullivan had an up and down performance against a strong Munich defense. He recorded 2 Touchdowns, threw for 3 Interceptions and 342 yards (29/48). Sullivans short passes were usually precisly on point but big plays went missing against pressure from Munichs defensive line. Two turnovers on downs, three interception plus one recovered Fumble by Munich was too much for the Thunder offense.
Penalties across the board
The Thunder had its biggest penalty problems in the Offensive line and recorded, often times due to a lack of focus, 12 penalties for an overall loss of 80 yards. The home team on the other side was targeted with flags too, especially in the second half. With 13 flags, of which 3 were against the defense for roughing the passer, the Ravens have room to improve here.
Russell Tabor on track
Munich #7 Russell Tabor has big shoes to fill after the departure of Chad Jeffries during the offseason. His first game against the Raider in Week 1 was alright, Tabor had a completion rate of 48.6%, threw for 2 TDs, 2 Interceptions and an overall of 260 yards. He won the game in the crunch time and I don`t want to drag down his Week 1 performance too much here. But Tabor really stepped one up against Berlin. He threw for more than 200 yards, 4 TDs and ran for another one himself. One of his 7 rushing attempts was a 56 yard run to get the Ravens in the game early on. Tabor came out Sunday and really showed his quality as a double- threat QB.
Tabor & Stanley- Shining Duo on the Munich Football Horizon
Tabors chemistry with Ravens new WR Malik Stanley is going to be crucial for this team. Tabor targeted Stanley 19 times in the first two weeks, who averaged 14.89 yards per reception against Tirol and 12.2 against Berlin. Stanley did not just catch 122 yards this week but also three Touchdowns and believe me when I say this: That is not a guy you want to have to guard. The ELF- referees have had a hard time keeping #3 away from his opponents after the whistle has already been blown. I have a feeling like his flag, thrown for unsportsmanlike Conduct, in the first quarter of Week 2 was not the only one we are going to see this year.
Berlin not as strong as believed, munich sends message
Looking back at this Weeks game, we saw a strong, focused performance by the Ravens who did not let anyone question them for a minute the entire game. With winning two home games early on, they send a clear message to the rest of the league: they are here to stay, they are here to compete and every team traveling to Munich is gonna face a winning team and a loud crowd supporting it.
Berlin kind of disappointed after a great start against Cologne and just did not make the Ravens lifes hard enough during the game. Both defense and offense showed too little, maybe Cologne was just a nice team to open the season with.
